Made in Sheffield Raises Concerns Over Knife Sales Reporting Rules

Made in Sheffield has contacted Gill Furniss MP to raise concerns about new measures in the Crime and Policing Bill 2025 that require sellers to report to police when more than six bladed items are sold to the same buyer or address within 30 days.

Following the enquiry, Gill Furniss MP received a response from Sarah Jones MP, Minister of State for Policing and Crime, who confirmed the rules are intended to target “grey market” sellers – those reselling knives online without age verification.

The Minister clarified that:

• Mixed kitchen knife blocks and cutlery knives are exempt from the reporting rule.

• Business-to-business sales are not affected.

• Sets of six or more identical knives, such as steak knives, will still need to be reported.

Made in Sheffield and the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce will continue to monitor the impact of these changes on legitimate local manufacturers and retailers.
