Sheffield is a City of Makers that has evolved over the centuries through metal products and steel manufacturing to its current advanced manufacturing excellence.  This development has been built on the skills and innovation of the workforce which continues today in the City and its surrounding region.  But, this does not mean that the traditional skills have died out or that the need for high quality “Made in Sheffield” cutlery and tooling used by craftsmen around the world has diminished.  In fact, the opposite is true as in the face of “globalisation” people have learnt that cheap comes with reduced life span and poor quality.

This section of the capability index is designed to highlight those license holding companies using these traditional skills and the heritage products they offer alongside the globally important Sheffield manufacturers supplying into the aerospace, energy and defence supply chains. The technology used in advanced manufacturing has also enabled more traditional manufacturing companies to adapt to current economic trends by adopting digital where appropriate but without compromising the skills elements inherent in the product, which is that make their products so special.  A drop forged knife or a hand chased silver bowl are an investment for generations not this season.

This page is an opportunity for the craftsmen, amateurs and collectors that appreciate these products to engage directly with Sheffield’s manufacturers.  It is a page for those who appreciate that “Made in Sheffield” still means the same attention to detail as it did in the days of the Little Mesters. Put simply “Made in Sheffield” on these heritage products means quality.
